Kurama: The Nine-Tailed Fox Sealed Within Naruto
Kurama is the strongest of the nine Tailed Beasts, a mass of living chakra born when the Sage of Six Paths split the Ten-Tails apart. For decades feared and weaponised by the shinobi world, Kurama spends most of the present-day story sealed inside Naruto Uzumaki — first as a resentful prisoner, and eventually as his closest ally.

Long ago, the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, sealed the immensely destructive Ten-Tails within himself and, on his deathbed, split its chakra into nine separate Tailed Beasts to prevent the creature from ever reforming. Kurama — the Nine-Tails — was the last and most powerful of the nine, carrying the greatest share of the original Ten-Tails' chakra.
For generations afterward, the Tailed Beasts were treated as living weapons, passed between villages as political leverage or sealed into human hosts to be used in war. Kurama in particular was fought over repeatedly — hosted first by Mito Uzumaki, then by Kushina Uzumaki, and finally sealed into the infant Naruto Uzumaki by his own father, Minato Namikaze, using the Reaper Death Seal on the night of the Nine-Tails' attack on Konohagakure.
His Vessel: Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto Uzumaki grows up as Kurama's jinchūriki, ostracised by much of the village for a burden he never chose and does not initially understand. For most of Part I, Kurama is a hostile presence: chakra Naruto can tap into during emergencies, but a beast that despises humanity and resents its captivity, its will visible only as a monstrous, corrosive red chakra cloak.
The relationship shifts permanently after Naruto learns the truth of Kurama's origin and the circumstances of his own birth. By confronting Kurama directly rather than merely drawing on its power, Naruto earns something no previous jinchūriki managed: genuine trust. Kurama eventually lends its chakra willingly, and the two become true partners rather than captor and prisoner.
Techniques and Chakra Mode
Kurama's signature technique is the Tailed Beast Ball, a devastating orb of condensed chakra capable of levelling terrain at the scale of a small mountain range. When Naruto draws on Kurama's power directly, he enters Chakra Mode, gaining massively amplified speed, strength, and stamina alongside instant wound regeneration fuelled by the fox's chakra.
The full partnership between the two culminates during the Fourth Shinobi War, when Kurama grants Naruto access to Tailed Beast Mode, effectively fighting alongside him as a visible fox-shaped chakra avatar. Combined with the Six Paths Sage Mode granted by Hagoromo, this partnership makes Naruto one of the most powerful combatants in the entire war.
What It Wants
Kurama is not motivated by conquest or cruelty for its own sake. Its hostility comes from a straightforward, understandable grievance: for its entire existence it has been captured, sealed, and used as a weapon by beings who saw it as nothing but power to be extracted, never as something with its own will.
Naruto is the first host to ask what Kurama actually wants rather than simply demanding its chakra. That single shift — treating the beast as a partner instead of a resource — is what eventually turns centuries of inherited hatred into one of the most important friendships in the entire series, and it is a major reason Naruto succeeds where previous jinchūriki, forced into an adversarial relationship with their own Tailed Beast, ultimately could not.
